Sailing Academy

The Southport Yacht Club's Sailing Academy at Hollywell offers excellent facilities and a supportive environment on the Broadwater.

Affiliated with Yachting Queensland and a Partner Club of Yachting Australia’s On Board Program of national sailing participation, our training centre caters for all levels of sailing expertise, from the novice to those wishing to improve their acquired skills.

All equipment, boats, buoyancy vests and encouragement are provided with each course. Rescue boats, with fully qualified instructors, are on the water ready to assist you with your training at any age.

Courses

FREE Try Sailing Days - No Reservations Required.
All ages welcome to join in the fun from 8:30am to 11:30am on the following dates:

Come for a sail with us! Buoyancy vests and all sailing equipment is provided. You'll just need to bring swimmers, hat, sunscreen, towel, old sandshoes or wetsuit booties and a desire to have fun!

 



Junior Sailing Lessons
Our Junior Sail Training Programs, for boys and girls aged 7 to 16 years are conducted on Sunday mornings, with sessions for all levels of ability, from first-time novices to those who are a part of our learn to sail programs. 

Junior FunSail Program: 8am to 9:30am Sunday mornings. This is an opportunity to try sailing using our X3 Dinghies in a safe controlled environment for a maximum of eight weeks before entering our Junior BasicSail Program.

Junior BasicSail Program: 9am to 11:30am Sunday mornings. This is a five session learn to sail program using club Optimist and Sabot Dinghies to attain Yachting Australia’s basic sailing level 1 and 2 certificates. Only twelve students per course.

Junior BetterSail Program: 4pm to 5:30pm Thursdays. This program is an introduction to racing for students once they have purchased their own boats.

School Holiday Sailing Camps
SYC conducts three-day Sail Training Programs during school holidays for children aged 7 – 16 years.  The camps are a great way to meet new friends, have fun on the water and try something different on your holidays.

We supply everything you will need for the camps – from boats and buoyancy vests to lunch and laughter! The camps run from 9am to 3pm each day and, due to their popularity, early bookings are recommended.

Adult Basic Sailing Lessons - Get Into Small Boat Sailing Course (GISBS)

This course is available to all over the age of 16 for the duration of five weeks (with one week in reserve). Held on Saturday mornings from 8:30am to 12:00pm on completion this course will provide you with GISBS Certificates 1 and 2. This course provides a good platform for completing the GISBS Certificate 3.

Adult Better Sailing Lessons - Get Into Small Boat Sailing Course (GISBS)
This course is run over a five week period (with one week in reserve), addressing the syllabus of the Yachting Australia “Get Into Small Boat Sailing” program builds upon the skills acquired in the “Basic Sailing” program.

Lessons are held on Saturday afternoons from 1:00pm to 4:30pm.
