Community

Southport Yacht Club is regularly involved in activities which are important to the Queensland state community:
 
• Recently the Southport Yacht Club hosted the launch of the SuperYacht Base Gold Coast City Inc., free of charge and is a strong member of this the SuperYacht cluster which is serious about bringing the SuperYacht life to the Gold Coast.
 
• Variety Splash is another Gold Coast community event which the Southport Yacht Club is involved in. The Variety splash raises funds for the Variety Queensland Children’s Charity, with tenants from Gold Coast City Marina and Southport Yacht Club participating in three fun-filled days of Variety-style fun and shenanigans on the Broadwater, concluding at SYC Main Beach. The next scheduled Variety Splash is 16th – 18th March 2007.
 
• Southport Yacht Club and Sailability continue to work together and on August 30th 2006 officially opened a new Sailability Storage shed at SYC’s Sailing Squadron, Hollywell in the honour of Sailability’s founder and SYC Past Commodore and Life Member – Wyn Treasure A.M. The shed has been named ‘Wyn’s Treasure Trove’.
 
• Southport Yacht Club has been an active member of the Queensland Blue Light Association for numerous years, helping to support them in their efforts to provide drug and alcohol free activities to the youth of Queensland.
 
• ‘Cloud 9 Luncheon’ Gold Coast Hospital Foundation 2006 received a dinner voucher for two from the Southport Yacht Club
 
• Southport Yacht Club donated four t-shirts and four caps to the Longreach Criminal Investigation Branch Gold Cay Fund Raiser 2006
 
• St. Hilda’s School Annual Fete received a Southport Yacht Club dinner voucher for two as a fete prize 2006
 
• Bruce Lynton’s 2006 Charity Ball received a Southport Yacht Club dinner voucher for two
 
• The Gold Coast Hospital’s Annual Red Sirens Luncheon received a Southport Yacht Club dinner voucher for two
 
• Southport Yacht Club donated $45.00 towards the Mater Foundation Underprivileged Children’s Movie Day 2006
 
• Rotary club of Broadwater Southport received $120.00 contribution from Southport Yacht Club towards the Gold Coast Children’s Festival
 
• Southport Yacht Club donated $500.00 to the Salvation Army’s annual Christmas Appeal 2005
 
• Cadet Warrant Officer Tamara Sheppard of TS Tyalgum received $300 from Southport Yacht Club this year to assist with her expenses in attending the International Sea Cadet Exchange in Canada July 2006
 
• Southport Yacht Club has sponsored four children to attend the Children’s Circus Spectacular in November 2006 organised by Variety Queensland, The Children’s Charity.
 
• To celebrate Peter McMahon’s (current Southport Yacht Club employee) graduation from Griffith University in November 2006, Southport Yacht Club has sponsored Griffith Health’s Graduation Ball with a Dinner for Two voucher for Southport Yacht Club’s Compass Room Restaurant and two Southport Yacht Club Polo shirts. Congratulations Peter.
 
• Southport Yacht Club has donated a Dinner for Two voucher to local radio station 94.1FM to assist in their Radiothon commencing 28th October 2006.
 
• Six local underprivileged and special needs children have been sponsored by Southport Yacht Club to attend the 5th Annual Underprivileged Children’s Christmas Circus Spectacular 2006, organised by the Mater Foundation and DRUG-ARM Australasia.
 
• Southport Yacht Club hosted and organised the ‘Norfolk’ visit to the Gold Coast to celebrate the centenary of Mathew Flinder’s circumnavigation and mapping of Australia
 
• Southport Yacht Club supported and publicised Andy Engwirda’s solo sail around Australia to raise funds for Legacy
 
• Southport Yacht Club hosts and organises the annual ‘Carols by the Broadwater’ which is in aid of the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal
 
• Southport Yacht Club financially supports the Gold Coast Marine Ambulance Service (operated in conjunction with Gold Coast Water Police)
 
• Southport Yacht Club financially supports local marine rescue services including Australian Volunteer Coast Guard and Volunteer Marine Rescue
 
• Southport Yacht Club is the host Club of ‘Windeward Bound’ which is used as a training vessel for disadvantaged and homeless youth
 
• Southport Yacht Club is a ‘Granter of Wishes’ for the Starlight Foundation’s Make-A-Wish program
 
• Southport Yacht Club provides financial support for youth sailors to compete in interstate/international events
• Southport Yacht Club has financially supported Musgrave Football Club in 2007.
